To make the Tesla Model 3's dashboard look as minimalist as possible, everything from the wipers to the headlights is controlled by a central touchscreen. The same screen also hosts the speedometer, with the mph reading located in the upper right corner of the screen so you can see it with just a slight turn of your head.
Although the Model 3's screen is slightly smaller and in landscape rather than portrait orientation, you can basically get everything else. The layout of the screen is intuitive, and while some of the smaller icons may distract you while you're driving, the system responds quickly once you make a selection.
There are plenty of useful features (like navigation and web browsing), popular add-ons like Netflix and Spotify, and some purely interesting apps. You also get two easy-to-use wireless phone charging pads underneath the infotainment screen, as well as several high-powered USB-C ports for fast device charging.
One problem, however, is that the Tesla Model3 doesn't have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone mirroring. It's also worth noting that while the Long Range and Performance variants feature free data connectivity that lasts for 12 months, the entry-level Model 3 is only available for 30 days. It is perfectly sized for the original display and fits perfectly into the car without damaging the internals. The brightness of the dashboard is combined with the brightness of the original car's large screen, which is automatically adjusted to be as bright as the original car. The original car's small speakers or Bluetooth connection allows for audio output from the phone to the original car, and our carplay supports a wide range of music software.
Last year, Tesla told regulators that the recalled touchscreens in nearly 135,000 Model S and Model X electric cars were only expected to last five to six years -- well below the average lifespan of cars currently on U.S. roads. Faulty touchscreens may be the cause.
Both vehicles use 17-inch touchscreens, which are used not only for infotainment features but also for what NHTSA considers safety-critical functions such as window defroster/defogger and turn signal beeps. NHTSA also notes that the screen failure could affect the Autopilot driver assistance system. It could also affect the federally mandated rearview mirror display.
Tesla's touchscreen-centric approach is something many other automakers are looking to replicate, and Tesla itself is doubling down.
