How to Add Wireless Carplay to Your Vehicles

Aug. 03, 2022

CarPlay is a convenient and secure way to extend the capabilities of your iPhone to your vehicle. But can you connect your iPhone wirelessly to a CarPlay receiver? Here's everything you need to know.

Why doesn't my car have wireless CarPlay?

First, if you don't have CarPlay, it may be because your infotainment system doesn't offer the services offered by Apple. If it does, it may be a big selling point at the time of sale.

But if you do have CarPlay in your car and you're wondering why you can't connect your iPhone to it wirelessly (even if you have Bluetooth), the answer is actually a little more complicated. As we mentioned, Apple CarPlay does support wireless connectivity, but only for vehicles with very specific hardware. A simple Bluetooth connection won't cut it at all.

Even if you can connect to a standard receiver via Bluetooth, the wireless standard isn't robust enough to handle the kind of data transfer needed for CarPlay to work.

Wireless CarPlay requires Bluetooth and in-car Wi-Fi to work properly. But that's not all. Your car actually needs a built-in dual-band router to support CarPlay.

That's why many vehicles with in-car Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity don't support Apple's infotainment system.

How to add wireless CarPlay to your car

There are many ways to get wireless CarPlay connectivity or add it to your vehicle, but none of them are free, and some aren't particularly easy. It's your choice.

Buy a car with wireless CarPlay

Some cars come with wireless CarPlay built in. First, you can purchase a vehicle directly with wireless CarPlay support. Obviously, this isn't a realistic option for most users. However, if you're in the market for a new car and wireless CarPlay is high on your list of priorities, then you can find a list of vehicles that support it.

But rest assured, a simpler solution is coming. And, over time, the list of cars with built-in wireless CarPlay is likely to grow.

Installing an Aftermarket CarPlay Receiver

CarPlay receivers are a great option, but they aren't cheap. Go for an aftermarket receiver that supports wireless CarPlay, which is much cheaper than buying a new car and allows you to add technology to your current vehicle.

But just like the list of cars that support wireless CarPlay, the list of CarPlay-compatible receivers is short. You'll need to actually install the receiver. You can pay someone to do it or do it yourself, but it can be a fairly complicated job. Also consider the built-in features you may lose, such as a backup camera.

Using a wireless CarPlay dongle

A wireless dongle may work, but your mileage will vary.

There are a number of Android-based wireless adapters that claim to allow users to add wireless connectivity to their existing infotainment system, whether it's CarPlay or Android Auto.

Our advice is to avoid using these devices whenever possible. We understand that these devices come from a cracked version of CarPlay in China, so there may be some compatibility and security risks associated with them.

Wait for a firmware update

Even if your vehicle has a nifty infotainment system built in, it's unlikely that the manufacturer of that system will add wireless CarPlay to the lineup. in some cases, OEMs could theoretically add wireless CarPlay to existing vehicles via a firmware update. But we haven't seen any signs of manufacturers rushing to do so.

Then there's the matter of the necessary hardware. Vehicles with infotainment systems that don't have an in-car dual-band Wi-Fi router won't be able to support wireless CarPlay.
