Since their introduction in the mid-1980s, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto have required a physical USB connection in almost all cases. But new in-car multimedia systems are beginning to offer wireless integration of both platforms - first in aftermarket audio systems, but more recently in some factory systems.
In just a few model years, wireless integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has gone from rare to commonplace. While most cars still require a traditional tethered USB connection for integration, many models now offer wireless CarPlay or Android Auto - the latter only recently, but in some cases can be added to previous model years with a wireless update.
BMW is the first automaker of the party to offer wireless Apple CarPlay on select cars starting with the 2017 model year. nonetheless, factory wireless CarPlay is not a given, and wireless Android Auto is still limited to the aftermarket. Today, the vast majority of both platforms still require a physical USB cable. We initially published a full list of all models offering wireless smartphone integration in 2019, but availability has increased significantly since then.

For vehicles that offer wireless Apple CarPlay or wireless Android Auto integration, this feature may not always be standard. In many cases, automakers limit wireless access to certain trim levels or optional packages while using traditional wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto elsewhere. some hybrid or high-performance versions may also offer the feature, so you'll need to research the models within for more details.
However, technology can and increasingly is changing as automakers adopt vehicles that can accept wireless updates. BMW, for example, now offers wireless Android Auto in some models through wireless updates to its Live Cockpit Professional and iDrive 7 interfaces. other cars with similar features may do the same.
Connectivity requires in-car Wi-Fi, because Bluetooth alone isn't powerful enough. The latter supports phone calls or streaming music, but it ends up supporting relatively little data. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require a more solid connection - starting with the power behind the physical cable, which both systems need at the start. A Wi-Fi connection to the multimedia system via an in-car router can accommodate more data.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto consume so much that we've observed that phones connected to older-generation USB ports lose battery power when using the systems, necessitating the use of a robust charging source. Wireless charging pads already answer the phone - a feature that is widely used throughout the industry, especially in cars with wireless Apple CarPlay.

No. Wi-Fi hotspots are standalone and allow devices in the car to access the Internet without using cellular data. Cars that have it typically charge a monthly subscription fee after a free trial period, but both BMW and Audi confirm that the subscription does not require activation of wireless Apple CarPlay to work. That said, your car may require a paid subscription to keep Apple CarPlay active in any form.
One final caveat: If there aren't any active Wi-Fi hotspots in your car, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto may use your phone's cellular data, whether via a USB cable or wireless connection. This, of course, may result in additional charges on your cellular bill based on data usage.
It's hard to say when more cars will be equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The head honcho said wireless Android Auto will expand, while Audi expanded wireless Apple CarPlay to make it available in most of its lineup for the 2021 model year. Benz said in 2018 that its MBUX multimedia system will support wireless CarPlay, but there's no update for the full 2022 lineup.
